Did You Know?

Storm Drains Empty into Our Bay!

Nothing Should be Discharged Down a Storm Drain.

They are for Storm Rain Waters Only.

Storm Drains are Not Part of our Sewer System.

Storm Water goes Untreated, Directly into Our Bays.

Storm drains are constructed to prevent flooding
by diverting rain waters off streets into local waters.

Chemicals that are used or disposed of improperly,
frequently mix with the storm water
and are transported by the same system into
our local streams, lakes and bays.

These chemicals can end up in the aquifer,
the sources of our drinking water!

COMMON CULPRITS
WHAT YOU CAN DO

Fertilizers
Chemicals washed down the drain with storm water cause
algae growth that sucks up all the oxygen killing fish.
Beautiful ponds turn into green slimy muck.

Oil and Grease
Cooking and Engine Oil and other leaks from cars go down
the drain and coat streambeds and seep into soil.

Pesticides/Herbicides
Contains strong poisons that are moved to the waterways
via stormwater, killing fish and organisms.

Be Conscious of Your Actions
Use Pesticides and all household chemicals only
when absolutely needed. Follow Instructions.

Clean Up after your Pet
Animal waste goes down the drain, elevating bacteria levels
that cause beach and shellfish closures.

Use an Oil Drip Pan
Dispose of all Chemicals Properly.
Follow Instructions for Usage and Disposal.

Don't put anything in a Storm Drain,
You Don't Want in Your Water.

Rain, Rain, Go Away...
But Pollution Ends Up in the Great South Bay!
