On September 23rd and 24rd, Save the Beaches volunteers conducted its fall program for 145 fifth graders from Babylon Grade School at Cedar Marina and Cedar and Overlook Beaches. |
The Program was a Huge Success with Wonderful Weather and Enthusiastic Students.
Eager volunteers worked for two days with students covering Fishing, Water and Boat Safety, Seine Fishing and Clamming, and the Dynamics of the Ocean and Beach Environment.

The Town of Babylon Bay Constable volunteer teachers were Bob Stanton and Tony Pozen on Tuesday and Bob Stanton came again on Wednesday with Steve Jawarski. |
On the south side of Ocean Parkway, STB volunteers led the students down the beach to teach them about endangered species, beach habitats, ocean dynamics and shore conditions . |

The sixth and final activity of the program was a documented beach clean-up. Once again, it was a huge success.
40 buddy groups set out with their parent chaperones and for 25 to 35 minutes picked up, bagged, and catalogued lots of debris.
In the spirit of reusing/recycling, STB households donated used grocery and department store bags
for the students to collect the debris.
The students recorded their finds on the data cards which were distributed by Ocean Conservancy.
The 40 completed and tabulated cards were summarized and the totals were sent to Ocean Conservancy
and the American Littoral Society of New York.
Thanks to all of the volunteers and to Carmine Tullo and DPW crew
from the Town of Babylon who carted away the collected trash.
Thanks also to Tim Taylor, who arranged for the Bay Constables with their boat
to teach the students about water safety.
The Parks and Recreation Department, under Frank Bachety,
should be very proud that the wonderful Babylon beach
and marina parks provide such wonderful classrooms.
The students from Mr. Fasciani’s, Miss Mielenhausen’s, Ms. Presuto’s, Mr. Rossi’s, Mr. Tordy’s, and Mrs. Zwerlein’s classes
went home from the very busy day tired, but enthusiastic, after their day of learning about the outer beaches habitats.
Save the Beaches is very proud to hear that many of the children who have attended the Educational Program declare,
“It’s the best field trip ever.”
Please remember...
